THE PROMISE OF WORLD PEACE
INTRODUCTION
The topic of our discussion today, the 28.12.2005, is The Promise of World Peace.
My comments are based upon a Proclamation by the Universal House of Justice, the supreme governing body of the Baha??i Faith to the People of the World in the year 1990
The Baha??i Faith is an independent Celestial Universal religion with some 7-10 million adherents in more than 145 countries. And the Tablets of BAHAULLAH have been translated into 67 languages
This proclamation is based on the Teachings of Baha??u??llah, the Prophet-founder of the Baha??i Faith as the last reluctanat Prophet.
Baha??u??llah was born in 1817 in Persia and died in 1892, a mere 103 years ago. He declared his mission to the world in 1863 as the messenger of God for this age.
Baha??u??llah explained that his revelation is ??God??s message of this age? and part on an endless chain of revelation beginning with Adam and never ending, in which at every stage of maturity of humanity, God sends his messenger to return a wayward humanity to the essential verities of God??s will for man such as ??kindness to one fellow man, belief in one God who orders the universe, and the timeless moral laws so clearly in Mose??s ten commandments.
However, each messenger from Adam,Abraham, Moses, Krisna, the Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed teaches God??s will in a way which can be understood by the peoples of his time and in the circumstances of the locality in which he lived. The essential verities remain the same. The laws, the traditions however are changed an updated with the arrival of the manifestation for that age. All the prophets, were Faithful, Reliable,Messenger of Revelations, Men of God??s Wisdom, without Sinful acts.
If one had to characterize the message of Baha??u??llah in one phrase, that phrase would be ??the unity of mankind? Baha??u??llah teaches that the promised day of all the religions of the past has arrived, the day in which the lamb and the lion will lie down together, the kingdom of God will be established on the earth.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Baha??u??llah??s teachings is ??the promise of world peace?. Baha??u??llah stated that world peace is not only possible, it is inevitable -- it is the next stage in the maturity of the human race as it leaves its adolescence and arrives at its coming of age with the full development of its intellectual and spiritual powers.
It is about this Promise of World Peace, that we will talk .We believe in One God,one Religion and a series of PROPHETS,sent by God,being the same Soul, only created at times when the celestial messages of God were misused.
THE STATEMENT OF THE UNIVERSAL HOUSE OF JUSTICE OF THE BAHA??I FAITH TO THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD IN _________________,__________
The Great Peace towards which the people of good will throughout the ages have sought and the scriptures of all the great religions have promised is now within reach of the nations of the Earth.
For the first time in history, the world may be regarded from the same perspective. World peace is not only possible, it is inevitable. It is the next stage in the evolution of the planet.
Whether peace is reached after unimagined horrors precipitated by man??s clinging to old patterns of behavior, or is embraced by an act of consultative will, is the choice which faces us in this age. Self-esteem is a funny thing. For some people it's become a ticket to entitlement, an exercise in narcissism and self-indulgence
Favorable Signs for Peace
The creation of the League of Nations after WW I
Creation of the United Nations after WW II
The achievement of independence since WW II by most of the nations representing completion of the process of nation building
The coordination of these new nations with older ones in matters of mutual concern.
The increase in cooperation among hitherto isolated and antagonistic people in science, education, legal, economic, and cultural fields.
The rise of an unprecedented number of international humanitarian organizations
The scientific and technological advances in this century portend a great surge forward in the social evolution of the planet.
Provide the means in which the practical problems of humanity may be solved.
REMAINING BARRIERS
Doubts, misconceptions, prejudices, suspicions and narrow self interests beset Nations and peoples in their dealings with each other
Bahaullah wrote ?? The winds of despair are, alas, blowing from every direction and the strife that divides and afflicts the human race is daily increasing. The signs of impending convulsions and chaos can now be discerned, in as much as the prevailing order appears to be lamentably defective.?
Flaws are conspicuous in
The inability of sovereign states organized under the United Nations to prevent war.
The dramatic inequity of the international economic order
The spread of anarchy and terrorism
Aggression and conflict have come to characterize the existing order. There is a general view that this behavior is intrinsic in human nature and therefore cannot be altered.
This view creates a paralyzing contradiction in human affairs. On the one hand, people the World over long for peace and at the same time the belief that the nature of human beings in selfish and aggressive and thus incapable of establishing a progressive and peaceful, dynamic and harmonious system giving free play to individual creativity and initiative but based on cooperation and reciprocity.
THE WAY FORWARD
In true fact, the aggression and conflict which characterizes our present order, are far from representing man??s true self. They represent in fact a distortion of the human spirit.
This view does not deny humanity??s past but provides the basis to understand it.
Baha??is regard the current confused state of human affairs as a natural phase in the organic process leading ultimately and irresistibly to the unification of the human race into a single social order whose borders are the planet.
The human race has passed through various evolutionary stages analogous to the stages of infancy and childhood, and is now drawing to a close, the turbulent phase of adolescence, thus approaching its long awaited coming of age.
Thus prejudice, war, and exploitation have been expressions of the immature stages of this vast historical process.
Whatever suffering and turmoil faces humanity in the years immediately ahead, Baha??is believe that humanity can confront this supreme trial with confidence in the ultimate outcome.
Far from signaling the end of civilization, the chaos and convulsive changes towards which humanity is being thrust will serve to release the potentialities inherent in the station of man? and reveal ?? the innate excellence of his reality.
THE CENTRAL ROLE OF RELIGION
The endowments which distinguish the human race from all other forms of life are summed up in what is known as the ??human spirit?, the mind in its essential quality.
these endowments have enabled humanity to build civilizations and prosper materially. But such accomplishments have never satisfied the human spirit, whose nature inclines it towards transcendence, reach toward the ultimate reality, that unknowable essence of essences we refer to as God.
The World??s great religions, brought to mankind through a succession of spiritual luminaries has been the primary link between humanity and that ultimate reality and have galvanized and refined mankind??s capacity to achieve spiritual success together with social progress.
No serious attempt to set human affairs aright, to achieve world peace can ignore religion.
It is an indisputable fact that the perversion of religion has contributed much to the confusion of society and conflicts between peoples. However, no fair minded observer can deny the great influence of the worlds religions on the evolution of civilization or its indispensability to social order through its influence on laws and morality.
Baha??u??llah said ??Religion is the greatest of all means for the establishment of order in the world and for the peaceful contentment of all that dwell therein.?
Referring to the eclipse or corruption of religion, he wrote, ??Should the lamp of religion be obscured, chaos and confusion will ensue, and the lights of fairness and justice, of tranquillity and peace will cease to shine?
In enumerating the consequences of the eclipse of religion, the Baha??i writings cite ??the perversion of human nature, the degradation of human conduct, the corruption and degradation of human institutions.
??Human character is debased, confidence is shaken, the nerves of discipline are relaxed, the voice of human conscience is stilled, the sense of decency and share is obscured, conceptions of duty, of solidarity, of reciprocity and loyalty are distorted, and the very feelings of peacefulness, of joy and hope is gradually extinguished.
THE UNITY OF RELIGIONS
Why then does religion today appear to be a part of the problem of the disunity and chaos in the world rather than a part of the solution?
One must blame:
Those who have held blindly and selfishly to their own orthodoxies
Those who have imposed erroneous and conflicting interpretations on the pronouncements of the Prophets of God
Those who have erected artificial barriers between faith and reason, between religion and science
A fair-minded examination of the actual utterances of the Founders of the great religions and the periods in which they carried out their missions, there is nothing to support the conflicts and prejudices which are today deranging the religious communities of mankind and therefore all human affairs.
The teaching that we should treat others as we ourselves would wish to be treated, an ethic repeated in all the great religions, sums up the moral attitude of all major religions and is the peace inducing aspect extending through these religions irrespective of the time and place of their origin.
Had humanity seen the Educators of its collective childhood in their true character, as agents of one civilizing process, it would have no doubt reaped incalculably greater benefits from the cumulative effect of their successive missions.
One final comment on religion, the resurgence of religious fanaticism occurring in many lands can only be regarded as a dying convulsion of these religious orthodoxies. The violent and disruptive nature of these outbursts testify to spiritual bankruptcy. One of the saddest aspects of these outbursts of religious fanaticism is not only the extent to which it undermines the spiritual values conducive to the unity of mankind but also undermining the unique moral victories won by the particular religion in purports to serve.
THE FAILURE OF MATERIALISM
No matter how important a civilizing force religion has been in the history of mankind, there is no doubt that it is viewed by increasing numbers of people as irrelevant to the concerns of the modern world.
In its place they have turned either the hedonistic pursuit of material satisfactions or to man-made ideologies designed to rescue society from the evils under which it groans.
In general terms, these ideologies instead of embracing the oneness of humanity and promoting peace and concord among people, tend to deify the state, to subordinate the rest of mankind to one nation, race, or class, to suppress the freedom of thought and expression, or to abandon millions of starving people to the operation of the market system which while creating enormous wealth for the minority, has yet to prove its ability to deal with the problems of majority of humanity.
The fruits of these doctrines are the social and economic ills which afflict every region of the World in the closing years of the twentieth century and beginning of 21.st.. Underlying all the outward ills is the spiritual damage reflected in the apathy of the masses and the extinction of hope in the hearts of millions of deprived people.
Why is the vast majority of the World??s population sinking even deeper into poverty while wealth undreamed of in past civilizations is at the disposal of the present arbiters of human affairs?
It is in the glorification of material pursuits, which is the common feature of all the ideologies, that we find the root cause of the misconception that human beings are innately selfish and aggressive.
Turning now to the ISSUES OF WORLD PEACE
Banning nuclear weapons, poison gases, and germ warfare will not remove the root causes of war.
People are ingenious enough to invent other forms of warfare-- to use food, water, raw materials, finance, industrial power, ideology, and terrorism to subvert one another in an endless quest for supremacy and domination.
Nor can the massive inequities and conflicts be solved by the settlement of specific conflicts and disagreements among nations.
A general universal framework must be established.
There is however a paralysis of will. This paralysis is rooted in the deep-seated belief of the inevitable quarrelsomeness of mankind, which has led to a reluctance the entertain the possibility of subordinating national self-interest to the requirements of the world order.
Tentative steps towards world order especially since WWII have been encouraging:
The increasing tendency of nations to formalize regional pacts to cooperate in matters of public interest such as:
The European Community
North American Free Trade Zone
Association of SE Asian Nations
Organization of African Unity
Increasing emphasis is being focused on some of the most deep-rooted problems of humanity such as:
human rights
genocide
rights of women
rights of children
torture
global pollution
hunger and disease
use of technology
In these areas, I would like to point out that in Baha??u??llah??s writings over a century ago, the former principles were espoused in furthering God??s will that in this glorious age, mankind would become united and wars would cease
Racism-- Baha??u??llah declared that all men were children of God, Flowers of the same garden, leaves of the same tree. Discrimination on the basis of race on one of the primary causes of war and human suffering
Extremes of wealth and poverty--Disparity of rich and poor keeps the world in a state of instability, always on the verge of war and chaos. Although equality is a chrimea and a totally unrealistic aim, means must be devised, the most important being voluntary sharing, to eliminate the extremes of both wealth and poverty.
Nationalism--a sane and legitimate sense of loyalty to ones on nation is a great virtue however excess nationalism, including dominating and abusing the rights on other nations to gain hegemony for one??s own nation is another of the great causes of war and human suffering. In fact, it must be realized that man has a higher loyalty, limited by no boundaries, that is the well being of the human race and the advancement of human society which in this age can only be accomplished by the unity of mankind.
Religious strife and fanaticism--is another of the greatest evils of human society responsible for much of the suffering of mankind throughout the ages. The time has come for all the religions to show the profoundest respect for their co-religionists, realizing that all the great religions are a part of the one God??s continuous revelation of his will to mankind. In fact it is time for all the religions to unite. This is the ultimate purpose and destiny of the Baha??i Faith.
The equality of women-- the achievement of equality between the sexes is one of the prime criteria for the establishment of peace. For the female nature is inclined towards harmony and consensus whereas the male orientation is towards aggression and domination. The domination of men tends to lead to harmful attitudes and habits are carried from the home to the workplace, political life, and ultimately, international relations.
An international auxiliary language--The inability of people to communicate with one another is a major barrier to the establishment of understanding and peaceful relations. The adoptions of an international auxiliary language, taught is schools throughout the globe, will eliminate this problem.
Two points require emphasis:
The abolition of war is not merely a process of signing treaties and setting up international organizations. Collective security is a chrimea.
The root causes of disunity must be addressed as issues of principle. A new morality must be developed thereby weaving these peace inducing principles into the moral fabric of society. This is a task throughout history most successfully accomplished by religion. Throughout history, the weaving the principles of the new manifestation in the moral fabric of humanity has been starting place of enormous strides forward for civilization.
THE NEW WORLD ORDER
The primary question to be resolved is how the present world, with its entrenched pattern of conflict, can change into a world where harmony and co-operation will prevail.
In essence a truly peaceful world order can only be based on the firm belief by the people of the world in the oneness of mankind, a spiritual truth which is confirmed by all of the human sciences.
Recognition of this truth requires the abandonment of prejudices of every kind-- race, class, nation, sex, degree of material civilization, i.e. everything which leads one people to feel themselves to be superior to another.
Acceptance of the oneness of mankind is the first fundamental prerequisite for reorganization and administration of the affairs of the world., of the world as one country, the home of humankind. It should therefore be universally proclaimed by every nation, taught in its schools and incorporated into the structure of its society.
It is the Baha??i view that recognition of the oneness of mankind calls for no less than a reconstruction and demilitarization of the whole civilized world into a world organically unified in its political machinery, its spiritual aspiration, its trade and finance, its script and language, and yet infinite in the diversity of the national character of its federated states.
Shogi Effendi, the Guardian of the Baha??i Faith wrote in 1931 ??Far from aiming at the subversion of the existing foundations of society, its seeks to broaden its basis, to remold its institutions in a manner consonant with the needs of an ever-changing world. It can conflict with no legitimate allegiances, nor can it undermine essential loyalties. Its purpose is neither to stifle the flame of a sane patriotism in man??s hearts, nor to abolish the system of intelligent patriotism in man??s hearts, nor to abolish the system of national autonomy so essential if the evils of excessive centralization are to be avoided. It does not ignore nor does it attempt to suppress, the diversity of ethical origins, of climate, of history, of language and tradition, of thought and habit, that differentiate the peoples and nations of the world. It calls for a wider loyalty, for a larger aspiration than any that has animated the human race. It insists upon the subordination of national impulses and interests to the imperative claims of a unified world. It repudiates excessive centralization on one hand and disclaims all attempts at uniformity on the other. Its watchword is unity in diversity.?
The achievement of these goals surely requires several stages in the adjustment of national political attitudes.
Great advances have already been made in the glorious century -- manifested by the League of Nations, the United Nations innumerable organizations and international agreements aiming and preventing conflicts between nations. Unfortunately, none of these have been able to put an end to war.
What is necessary to reach beyond these efforts and achieve the final goal.
In the mid-nineteenth century Baha??u??llah put forward to principle of ??collective security in this letters to the rulers of the world. He wrote?
??The Great Being, wishing to reveal the prerequisites of the peace and tranquillity of the world and the advancement of its peoples, hath written: The time must come when the imperative necessity for the holding of a vast, an all-embracing assemblage of men will be universally realized. The rulers and kings of the earth must needs attend it, and, participating in its deliberation, must consider such ways and means as will lay the foundations of the world??s Great Peace amongst men. Such a peace demandeth that the Great Powers should resolve, for the sake of tranquillity of the peoples of the earth, to be fully reconciled among themselves. Should any king take up arms against another, all should unitedly arise and prevent him. If this be done, the nations of the world will no longer require armaments, except for the purpose of preserving the security of their realms and of maintaining internal order within their territories. This will ensure the peace and composure of every people, government and nation. We fain would hope that the kings and rulers of the earth, the mirrors of the gracious and almighty name of God, may attain unto this station, and shield mankind from the onslaught of tyranny.?
What is missing in today??s efforts towards peace? Spiritual and moral qualities are required for effecting this momentous step towards peace, selfless love of one people for another, the pure motive, the resolution, and the courage.
In this statement, the Universal House of Justice of the Baha??i Faith appealed to the leaders of all the nations ??to seize this opportune moment and take irreversible steps to convoke this world meeting. Al the forces of human history impel the human race towards this act which will mark for all time the dawn of its long awaited maturity.
Stating again the original statement ??whether peace is reached only after unimaginable horrors precipitated by humanity??s clinging to old patterns of behavior, or is to be embraced now by an act of consultative will, is the choice before all who inhabit the earth.?
THE BAHA??I MODEL
The experience of the Baha??i community may be seen as an example of the enlarging unity which is evolving in the present day. It is community of some 8-10 million people drawn from many nations, cultures, classes, and creeds, engaged in a wide range of activities serving the spiritual , social, and economic needs of the peoples of many lands. It is a single social organism, representative of the diversity of the human family, conducting its affairs through a system of commonly accepted consultative principles, and cherishing equally all the great outpourings of divine guidance human history. Its existence is yet another convincing proof of the practicality of its Founder??s vision of a united world, another evidence that humanity can live as one global society, equal to whatever challenges its coming of age will entail.
QUOTATIONS FROM THE WRITINGS OF BAHA??U??LLAH
THE NATURE OF MAN
?O Son of Man! Veiled in My Immemorial being and in the ancient eternity of My essence, I knew My love for thee; therefore I created thee, have engraved on thee Mine image and revealed to thee My beauty.?
??O Son of Being! With the hands of power I made thee and with the fingers of strength I created thee; and within thee have I placed the essence of My light. Be thou content with it and seek naught else, for My work is perfect and My command is binding. Question it not, nor have a doubt thereof.?
??O Son of Spirit! I created thee rich, why dost thou bring thyself down to poverty? Noble I made thee, wherewith dost thou abase thyself? Out of the essence of knowledge I gave thee being, why seekest thou enlightenment from anyone beside Me? Out of the clay of love I molded thee, how dost thou busy thyself with another? Turn thy sight unto thyself, that thou mayest find Me standing within thee, mighty powerful and self-subsisting.?
??O Son of Man! Thou art my dominion and My dominion perisheth not, wherefore fearest thou thy perishing? Thou art My light and My light shall never be extinguished, why dost thou dread extinction? Thou art My glory and My glory fadeth not; thou art My robe and My robe shall never be outworn. Abide then in thy love for Me, that thou mayest find Me in the realm of glory.?
??O son of Spirit! Noble have I created thee, yet thou hast abased thyself. Rise then unto that for which thou wast created.?
??Man is the supreme talisman. Lack of a proper education hath, however, deprived him of that which he doth inherently possess. Through a word proceeding out of the mouth of God he was called into being; by one word more he was guided to recognize the source of his education; by yet another word his station and destiny were safeguarded. The Great Being saith: Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom.?
??Upon the inmost reality of each and every created thing He hath shed the light of one of His names, and made it a recipient of the glory of one of His attributes. Upon the reality of man, however, He hath focused the radiance of all of His names and attributes, and made it a mirror of His own Self. Alone of all created things man hath been singled out for so great, so enduring a bounty.?
??How resplendent the luminaries of knowledge that shine in an atom, and how vast the oceans of wisdom that surge within a drop! To a supreme degree is this true of man, who, among all created things, hath been singled out for the glory of such distinction. For in him are potentially revealed all the attributes and names of God to a degree that no other created being hath excelled or surpassed. All these names and attributes are applicable to him. Even as He hath said: ??Man is My mystery, and I am his mystery.?
THE PURPOSE OF THE BAHA??I REVELATION
??O ye who dwell on earth! The distinguishing feature that marketh the preeminent character of this Supreme Revelation consisteth in that We have, on the one hand, blotted out from the pages of God??s holy Book whatever hath been the cause of strife, of malice and mischief amongst the children of men, and have, on the other, laid down the essential prerequisites of concord, of understanding, of complete and enduring unity. Well is it with them that keep My statutes.?
ABANDONING ALL FORMS OF PREJUDICE
??O Humankind! Verily, ye are all the leaves and fruits of one tree; ye are all one. Therefore, associate in friendship; love one another; abandon prejudices of race; dispel forever this gloomy darkness of human ignorance, for the century of light, the Sun of Reality hath appeared. Now is the time for affiliation, and now is the period of unity and concord. For thousands of years ye have been contending in warfare and strife. It is enough. Now is the time for unity. Lay aside all self-purposes, and know for a certainty that all men are the servants of one God Who will bind them together in love and agreement.?
REGENERATION OF THE WORLD THROUGH THE TEACHINGS OF BAHA??U??LLAH
??The world??s equilibrium hath been upset through the vibrating influence of this most great, this new World Order. Mankind??s ordered life hath been revolutionized through the agency of this unique, this wondrous System-the like of which mortal eyes have never witnessed.?
??Through the movement of Our Pen of glory We have, at the bidding of the Omnipotent, breathed a new life into every human form, and instilled into every word a fresh potency. All created things proclaim the evidences of this worldwide regeneration.?
MATERIAL CIVILIZATION
??The civilization, so often vaunted by the learned exponents of arts and sciences, will, if allowed to overleap the bounds of moderation, bring great evil upon men. thus warneth you He Who is the All-Knowing. If carried to excess, civilization will prove as prolific a source of evil as it has been of goodness when kept within the restraints of moderation.?
??Consider the civilization of the West, how it hath agitated and alarmed the peoples of the world. an infernal engine hat been devised, and hath proved so cruel a weapon of destruction that its like none hath ever witnessed or heard. The purging of such deeply rooted and overwhelming corruptions cannot be effected unless the peoples of the world unite in pursuit of one common aim and embrace one universal faith. Incline your ears unto the Call of this Wronged One and adhere firmly to the Lesser Peace.
Strange and astonishing things exist in the earth but they are hidden from the minds and understanding of men. These things are capable of changing the whole atmosphere of the earth and their contamination would prove lethal.?
We are all created as the leaves,on different branches of Life-tree of Holy Spirit.
`
Know thou that all the powers combined have not the power to establish universal peace, nor to withstand the overmastering dominion, at every time and season, of these endless wars. Erelong, however, shall the power of heaven, the dominion of the Holy Spirit, hoist on the high summits the banners of love, justice and peace, and there above the castles of majesty and might shall those banners wave in the rushing winds that blow out of the tender mercy of God.
Abdu'l-Baha, Selections from the Writings of Abdu'l-Baha (Haifa, Baha'i World Centre, 1978) p. 174. E-text from Ocean Library, http//:www.bahai-education.org
What is Sharia law? SERIAT Law is the unique rules of God,the merciful?
Under Sharia Islamic law, making money from money, such as charging interest, is usury and therefore not permitted
Wealth should be generated only through legitimate trade and investment in assets.
But investment in companies involved with alcohol, gambling, tobacco and pornography is strictly off limits.
How does Islamic( Peaceful ) finance work?
The overarching principle of Islamic finance is that all forms of interest are forbidden.
The Islamic financial model works on the basis of risk sharing.
The customer and the bank share the risk of any investment on agreed terms, and divide any profits between them.
The main categories within Islamic finance are: Ijara, Ijara-wa-iqtina, Mudaraba, Murabaha and Musharaka.
Icara is a leasing agreement whereby the bank buys an item for a customer and then leases it back over a specific period.
Icara-wa-Iktina is a similar arrangement, except that the customer is able to buy the item at the end of the contract.
Mudaraba offers specialist investment by a financial expert in which the bank and the customer shares any profits.
Customers risks losing their money if the investment is unsuccessful, although the bank will not charge a handling fee unless it turns a profit.
Murabaha is a form of credit which enables customers to make a purchase without having to take out an interest bearing loan. The bank buys an item and then sells it on to the customer on a deferred basis.
Musharaka is a investment partnership in which profit sharing terms are agreed in advance, and losses are pegged to the amount invested.
What types of Islamic financial products are currently available?
Nearly all the traditional retail banking services expected from established High Street banks are available in a Sharia compliant format.
The Islamic Bank of Britain offers a Sharia compliant current account, mortgage and even personal loan.
HSBC offers a Islamic current account and mortgage.
A handful of other banks - including some of the biggest international names and the Middle East's biggest traditional banks - also offer financial products in the UK tailored for Muslims.
And from 1 September, Children's Mutual is to offer a Sharia compliant Child Trust Fund.
How strong is the demand for Islamic finance?
Banks are hoping to attract business from Britain's two million,Germany 4 million and total in Europe- nearly 14 million Muslims, many of whom do not use established banking services because they are mentally in conflict with Sharia.
Children's Mutual is targetting the parents of 120,000 Muslim babies with it's Sharia compliant Child Trust Fund.
In a survey last year, Datamonitor said that demand for sharia-compliant mortgages was strong, and could yield up to £4.5bn in advances by 2006.
